  1. Matt is a smart, curious, doubtful, and musical boy, he is ready to learn at the moment and he wants to find everything out. The teacher that El Patron had got him was a very repetitive person and had finally gotten him to speak after a few years when he doubted that he could making him doubtful. Later Tam Lin had given him a chest full of books and other materials and he was dying to read them when he was at the oasis. He also excelled with his reading math and other skills while learning from books. He learned music from a blind music teacher and eventually passed him in a musical ability. He also learned how to play multiple instruments.

  2. Matt is a kind-hearted, albeit naive, kid. A prime example is when Matt and Tam Lin are riding to Tam’s hidden oasis and they encounter a dead eejit in the opium fields. Matt wanted to held the man, not realizing that he was dead from heat or dehydration (77-78).

  4. Matts traits have sort of been the same throughout the book. Then again his actions are changing. He is now going to an oasis every week. I think he does this to figure more out about the house.
